What Does Business Funding Cost? Total Payback Explained

APR, factor rates, points, and fees measure different things. Compare net proceeds, total payback, term, remittance cadence, fees, and annualized cost where available.

Operators lose money when they compare one favorable label and ignore the rest. Someone quotes a “factor rate.” Someone else quotes APR. A third person says “2 points.” A sound comparison answers all of these questions:

How much cash arrives, what is every fee, how much leaves the business, on what cadence, over what term, and what is the annualized cost where it can be estimated?

Total payback is essential — not the only measure

If the purchase price is $20,000 and the agreement says you remit $26,000, your total payback is $26,000 and the difference is $6,000 before accounting for any fee deducted from the amount deposited. If a 7.5% origination fee is deducted, the net cash received is $18,500. All three numbers matter.

Before you sign any business funding offer:

  1. Write down the gross purchase price and net cash deposited
  2. List every fee and when it is charged
  3. Write down total payback and the term
  4. Record payment cadence (daily / weekly / monthly)
  5. Review APR or estimated APR when provided
  6. Stress-test remittance against your slowest recent weeks

Factor rates and APR measure different things

  • Factor rate — simple multiplier on the advance (common in MCA / advance products)
  • APR — annualized cost; useful for comparing products, even though short terms can produce very high annualized figures
  • Fees — origination, ACH, wire — must be included in total dollars out

APR does not answer timing or cash-flow fit by itself, and total payback does not show annualized cost by itself. Use both where available. Then weigh speed and the expected return from the business use of funds; urgency does not make an expensive structure cheaper.

Early payoff is part of cost

Some structures (including Quickie) reduce what you owe if you clear early. That is real economic optionality — but only if it is in the signed agreement. Ask. Get it in writing.

For sizing the ask itself, use how much working capital should I take. For product shape, start with working capital vs MCA vs term loan.

Common questions

What is the most important cost number in business funding?

Total payback — how many dollars you return over the life of the agreement — plus the weekly or daily remittance your cash flow must support.

How should APR be used for short-term advances?

APR annualizes cost and can make short terms look especially high, but it is still a useful comparison measure. Use it alongside net proceeds, total payback, fees, term, payment cadence, and expected business return.

How does Quickie show cost?

Upfront total payback and a fixed weekly ACH amount, with early payoff potentially reducing what you owe. Review the signed offer for your exact economics.
